On October 26th, 1993 at the League meetings in Chicago, NFL Owners unanimously selected the Carolina Panthers as the 29th NFL franchise and the first expansion team since 1976.

On April 22, 1994, Panthers owner and Founder Jerry Richardson held the ground breaking ceremony at the stadium site.

The Panthers were placed at the front of the 1995 Draft order when Richardson won a coin toss between himself and Wayne Weaver of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The coin was tossed at the NFL Draft headquarters by NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

On November 2, 1994, Tagliabue set the Panthers in the NFC Western Division along with Atlanta, New Orleans, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
